Follow these easy step-by-step instructions
Step 1) Gather your Supplies
You will need a sheet of thick wool felt ( at least 1/4 inch), a minimum of 4 colors of wool roving, straight pins, sharp scissors, felting needle, felting foam or brush, and small circular cookie cutter.
Step 2) Cutting the Coaster Blanks
Using a paper circle approximately 4 inches wide, pin it to the wool. Using sharp scissors, cut along the outer edge of the paper circle.
Step 3) Repeat step 2 so you have 4 coaster blanks total.
Step 4) Place a smooth edge, round cookie cutter between 1 and 2 inches in diameter on the felting block. Stuff a small amount of roving into the center of the cutter.
Step 5) Using the felting needle, press down on the roving, pushing the needle 3/4 way into the block. Make sure your needle is at a 90 degree angle to the block. Repeat this motion until the fibers have locked together and a circle has been formed.(Tip: Pushing the needle in at an angle can cause the needle to snap.)
Step 6) Once your circle has been tightly felted, you can remove it from the block and set it aside. Repeat steps 4 & 5 as many times you like with as many colors of roving and sizes of cookie cutters as you like.
Step 7) Place a felt coaster blank on the block. Select one of your largest felted dots and place it on top of the coaster blank. Using the felting needle press down on the dot, pushing the needle 3/4 way into the block. Make sure your needle is at a 90 degree angle to the block. Repeat this motion until the fibers from the dot have locked together with the coaster blank.(Tip: Pushing the needle in at an angle can cause the needle to snap.)
Step 8) Repeat Step 7, attaching your wool dots to each blank. Be creative.(Optional, cut a bright colored piece of felt 1/4 inch smaller in diameter than the coaster blank and hand applique it to the back side of the coaster)
Step 9) …and…You’re Done!
Place these super absorbent coasters around your house and let them soak up the sweat from all of your ice cold beverages.
