Under the Big Top

Today I stumbled across a series of color photographs of circus performers from the 1940s-1950s on howtobearetronaut.com.

These images are stunning and although I read the book months ago, they quickly brought to mind the bestselling book by Sara Gruen, Water for Elephants.

Water for Elephants quickly became a #1 New York Times Bestseller after it’s release in 2007.  Since then, it has sold over 3 million copies and has been translated into over 40 languages.

The author skillfully weaves the lives of her colorful cast of characters through real life accounts of the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth’s traveling circus. Gruen’s in-depth research into the history of the circus is beautifully captured in the rich, colorful world she creates for soon-to-be veterinarian school drop out, Jacob Jankoski  finds himself working as a vet for the menagerie and falling in love with the big top’s leading performer Marlena.
